Rating scales are little more than a standardized vocabulary for communicating information from a patient , parent , or teacher regarding a child or adolescent set of problems . Those problems tend to statistically cluster or covary together , producing " factors " or dimensions . Those factors , unlike the items on which they are based , are a more general abstraction of the child's behavior The name we assign to them is somewhat of a hypothesis : our best guess of what the items have in common or a hypothesis about an underlying unity based on a common cause or influence presumed to be at work . Thus , when a parent describes a child as restless , overactive , always " on the go , " always climbing , etc. , we think of " restlessness " or " hyperactivity , " or some such construct , to describe the commonality of the items .
