Dictation Practice contains the longhand , counted in tens for dictation , of material graded to extend the vocabulary taught in First Course . The shorthand is presented in workbook form . The 17 sections each contain short forms ; phrases ; dictation in three parts : ( a ) easy , ( b ) and ( c ) standard ; theory - checks ; and free dictation . The longhand theory - checks and free dictation are aids to the teacher for assessing students ' progress and do not appear in shorthand in the Workbook ; all the other practice material is printed in PITMAN 2000 SHORTHAND in the Workbook Parts 1 and 2. Each shorthand line is followed by two lines for copying . Tapes and cassettes complementary to Dictation Practice are available at basic speeds of 50 to 90 w.p.m. All the material is dictated twice , first at the basic speed and then at either 10 or 20 w.p.m.faster .
