Beginning Composition Through Pictures. Written for pupils who have been learning English as a second or foreign language for two or three years, it is essentially an introductory book to J. B. Heaton's highly successful and popular Composition Through Pictures. The twenty-eight picture compositions provide practice for both oral and written work. For each composition the vocabulary is carefully controlled, and one or more basic sentence patterns and grammatical terms are given to be practiced before the pupil begins the composition. As well as picture stories, a few pictures for description and for comparison, and maps and plans for instructions and description are included. A foreword to the teacher gives detailed guidance on the most effective exploitation of the pictures, and an appendix lists the chief structures and helpful phrases for describing the pictures.
